The last minute accord settled an issue that threatened to derail the U.N.'s World Summit on the Information Society, which began here Wednesday. The multilateral gathering -- conceived to bridge the 'digital divide' between rich nations and poor -- has drawn thousands of delegates and observers from around the globe to this port city in the North African desert. Schoolgirl wins Google doodle competition

CNET News.com: "A London schoolgirl has beaten hundreds of rivals in a competition to create a doodle for Google's U.K. Web site.
Lisa Wainaina, aged 11, triumphed with her drawing called 'The Day of the Child.' As a reward, she received an upper case 'G' of frosted glass, and her school won an interactive whiteboard.
The 'Doodle 4 Google' school challenge was open to pupils at 25 London schools. It was judged by Dennis Hwang, the 26-year-old creator of the popular Google doodles that appear on Google's home page to mark special occasions.
'I thought I had a pretty secure job, but these kids are competition I wasn't aware of,' Hwang joked. 'My job security just went out the window.'
Google held the competition to mark the launch of a new London office, which like Google's Silicon Valley office is called the Googleplex, on two floors of Belgrave House near Victoria Station. "

Blogs Become Conglomerates

RED HERRING : "Open Source Media, an experiment in online media combining blogs and journalism, launched Wednesday after landing more than 70 contributors and $3.5 million in funding.

OSM will bring together bloggers and journalists to have "a very strong dialogue between opinion and fact," according to CEO Roger Simon, who said he is "effectively editor-in-chief."

The launch in New York City featured a speech about the credentials and privileges of journalists by former New York Times journalist Judith Miller, who recently left the paper in a cloud over questions about her contacts with White House officials in the CIA leak case.

Politicos wary of changes to copyright law

Politicians on Wednesday voiced reluctance to rewrite laws and allow people to bypass, in the name of fair use, copy-protection mechanisms on goods such as CDs and software.

The statements came at a hearing here convened by a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee that deals with commerce, trade and consumer protection.

A provision of standard copyright law known as fair use allows for permission-free reproduction of certain copyright works, provided it's for certain noncommercial purposes, such as teaching, news reporting, criticism and research.
