This NASA handout satellite image obtained shows the minimum concentration of Arctic sea ice that occurred in September 2005, when the sea ice extent dropped to 2.05 million sq. miles. Global warming is melting the Arctic ice so fast that a new sea route is opening up between the Atlantic and the Pacific.
